BMW 5-series offers a wide range of engines in both petrol and diesel line-up and the good news is that each and every engine offers a thrilled ride. BMW 5-series performance is not an issue in the lower powered car segment.

BMW diesel engines are most common in the 5-series line-up with four cylinders and 2.0-litre configurations. It offers a perfect blend of power and economy with the pace for most drivers.

The 2.0-litre 520d engine

This engine generates 184bhp and manages the sprint from zero to 62 miles per hour in just 8.1 seconds. It is the same timing as of the Volkswagen Golf GTD, but it has a great pulling power to offer easy overtaking.

The average fuel economy figures of the 2.0-litre engine are 57 miles per gallon and CO2 emissions of 132g/km. All these figures make the 520d a superb choice for the company drivers. An automatic engine start/stop system is available to help the engine to further cut the fuel consuming when stopped at the junctions or in traffic.

The 3.0-litre 525d engine

Let’s have a look at the BMW 525d model, it uses a straight six 3.0-litre engine that produces the power output of 204bhp. It’s a perfectly smooth engine that offers a joyful ride. It will accelerate from zero to 62 miles per hour in just 7.2 seconds. Though it has a better performance record, but there is another model in the dieselline-up that offers truly sheering performance.

The 3.0-litre 530d engine

This is a BMW 530d, uses the same engine as the 525d but power is boosted to 245bhp and it manages 0-62 miles per hour sprint time just under 6.5 seconds. It has an average fuel economy of 45 miles per gallon. It has massive reserves of torque and is incredibly responsive. Compared to its predecessors, the 5-series is a classier and cultured vehicle and has several benefits over its alternatives like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
